The world of film reviews ”Another Day of Life”

“Another Day of Life” has just started great adventure on the big screen. The critics’ reviews after first Special Screening at the Cannes Film Festival, are, gently speaking, very positive.

Awaited memoirs of reporter

The “Variety” puts it simply – finally the day of this much-awaited animation / live action hybrid film has come. “Another Day of Life” depicts experiences of Ryszard Kapuściński during the war in Angola in 1975 and thus it may be described as documentary or biopic. “Variety” notices that those events established the literary reputation of Polish reporter.

The hero in the heart of history

The review of ,,Cineuropa’’ highlights that the greatly detailed film takes the viewer on the unusual journey, not only to the heart of 1970’s Angola and Africa dreaming about freedom, but also ,,to the core of the journalist’s psyche’’. Exciting adaptation of Kapuściński’s book “Another Day of Life” interrogates perfectly and precisely the role, the influence, the power and responsibilities of Kapuściński on the arena of history. The review notices that the Polish reporter is ,,historical figure in international jounalism’’ – significant, but rare as well. The hero always stood out ,,eagerly providing a voice for all those muzzled by poverty.’’

Unusual mixture of animation and documentary

Damian Nenow and Raul de la Fuente, the directors of the movie, masterfully take advantage of all possibilities given by the animation technique. It enables to combine the fictional elements with documentary ones and to tell the vivid story. “Screen Daily” points out that mixture of live action film and animation may be disconcerting at the very start, but it makes the amazing effect ,,matching documentary authenticity with dramatic intensity’’. It is also a merit of the script, which focuses on moral choices and difficult decisions. “Screen Daily’’ writes it directly: ,,The human testimony is undoubtedly the most engaging aspect’’. Therefore, “Another Day of Life” surely will attract not only film festivals audience, but also viewers appreciating fresh, non cliché perspective on still actual, although historical, events.

The climate that delights

“Hollywood Reporter’’, one of the most popular source of information for film fans, is delighted with our movie as well. However, the portal notices that such high-risk film project could end up with total chaos. But it didn’t, as we get ,,visually striking piece of rare immediacy and power” and one with simple, significant message. The greatest advantage of Raul de la Fuente and Damian Nenow’s masterpiece, according to “Hollywood Reporter”, is atmosphere – sometimes chaotic and uneasy as this is bloody war and sometimes magical, as even at wars there are dreams and visions.
